Bernie's mittens meme has been a great lighthearted break in the news. We loved the picture...and how everyone is posting it. We thought he needed to update his mask game though. So we made this mask from our vintage silk fabrics with Bernie in mind. We named it "Miton" , (MEE-tawn), which is mittens in Japanese.
All of our masks sales support Food Lifeline. We were glad to see what a great sense of humor he has had about his fashion statement, and how he is using it on items in his campaign store that will support the Vermont food banks and community centers.
Inspired by this cultural perspective of the face mask in Japan, and in light of recent events, we wanted to make these for sale and give the proceeds to the Food Lifeline charity. We are producing these from vintage silk kimono textiles. Where we have leftover production fabric we are using the small pieces in hand so nothing is wasted.
This is a three layer mask. The outer layer is from a vintage silk kimono, the middle layer is interfacing, and the lining that lays against your skin is silk charmeuse. The three layers are tacked together at the center seam so it stands away from your mouth when worn. Our mask has an elastic back band that slides up and down on the side straps. Put the top strap over the top of your ears, and adjust the back band up or down into position for the most comfortable fit.
Shell Fabric - 100% Silk. This yarn dye ikat fabric is from a Men's Haori, (kimono coat). Fabric is from the Kyoto Prefecture in Japan. We did a blend of two YD silk fabrics for this mask.
Lining - 100% Silk. Luxurious Charmeuse lining in color Pumpkin.
Care - Machine Wash Cold on Delicate Cycle in lingerie bag. Tumble Dry on Medium Heat in lingerie bag or hang to air dry. Iron if needed on Silk Setting. Wash with like colors.
